CBB Colorado – 6 Charleston
At one time, the quality of the returning players was huge this time of the year even more so on opening night. This is no longer the case. In the day of juco transfers making immediate impact and blue chippers barely hanging around long enough to get their sheets dirty, continuity and experience has taken a backseat to good old fashion talent. Colorado since Ricardo Patton took over as coach has been a big quick fix team and such is the case this time around.
6-foot-9 junior Andy Osborn at power forward, 6-9 junior Julius Ashby at center and 6-6 freshman Richard Roby at shooting guard. The Buffs are 8-0 SU in season openers under coach Ricardo Patton, a testament to how his juco recruiting pays off early. Patton is 71-25 in nonconference games and has lost only six nonconference CU home games.
Osborn, a former Longmont High School star, averaged 10 points per game in two seasons at Loyola Marymount. Ashby, a native of the Caribbean nation of Trinidad and Tobago, averaged 15 points, eight rebounds and four blocked shots last year at Marshalltown (Iowa) Community College.
That’s why we are not impressed by the fact Charleston is senior laden. Sure it may help a bit if it’s March but it isn’t. I just checked my calendar and confirmed.
